The yearly cycle shifts according to the sexagenary stem-and-branch cycle of each year. Just as winter sunlight shifts its angle a little each day, the stars settle onto a new house each year and awaken the nature of that house.

Once the yearly luck house is established, we look at how the stars already residing there interact with the flying stars. The flying stars refer to the Four Transformations (四化, sìhuà), which are the four types of transformation: Hua Lu (abundance), Hua Quan (authority), Hua Ke (merit), and Hua Ji (tension).

When the Four Transformations land in the yearly luck house

• When Hua Lu enters the yearly luck house: a current tends to open around wealth, relationships, and opportunities
• When Hua Quan enters the yearly luck house: this can be a period when responsibility and a sense of agency grow
• When Hua Ke enters the yearly luck house: achievements in study, reputation, or documents may come to the surface

Conversely, when the major cycle and yearly cycle fall on houses that are in conflict with each other, that area of life may be moving through a period of change and realignment.

In the case of the man in his early forties mentioned earlier, the major cycle was passing through the Career House. The yearly cycle's Hua Ji had also landed in that same Career House, which explained why career questions were rising to the surface. Rather than calling this a crisis, we read the primary star and supporting stars of the Career House together, and arrived at a sense of the year as a time of recalibration.

The Stars Show Possibility, Nothing More: How to Approach a Yearly Cycle Reading

The most important thing to guard against in a yearly cycle reading is treating the stars as verdicts. The fact that a certain star lands in a certain house means that energy in that direction is opening up. It is not a ruling that something will definitely happen.
